Arnett clip spiralling Waterhouse
In a match where both teams needed a win to turn their season's fortunes around, Arnett Gardens clipped Waterhouse 1-0 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex in Monday Night Football action of the Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL).
Shai Smith scored the decisive goal for the Junglists in the 62nd minute of the contest as he handed his team all three points.
In the earlier game of the double header, Molynes United downed Tivoli Gardens 3-2 in a five-goal thriller.
In the feature game, Waterhouse started the stronger of the two teams and fashioned a number of opportunities at goal by driving down the right side of Arnett's defence.
They came close to the opener in the 23rd minute when Denardo Thomas rose high to meet a ball into the box, but his header on target was coolly collected by the goalkeeper.
Thomas came close again three minutes later but sent his curling effort high of the mark.
Both teams continued to create opportunities but could not find a goal in the opening stanza and went into the half-time break level.
Arnett roared to life in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts with a well-deserved goal.
Smith turned on the burners as he was quick to race into the box and get a solid strike on a failed clearance attempt to bury the ball into the back of the net.
Waterhouse, despite their best efforts, were not able to find an equalising strike and felt they deserved a lot more after the final whistle.
The defeat extended Waterhouse's poor run of form in the JPL as their winless streak now stretches to five games,.
The result also means they have only won one of their last 10 matches, and sit 11th in the league standings on 15 points, three points above the relegation zone.
For Arnett, the win sees them return to winning ways and continue their positive results in the second round after a topsy-turvy first-round campaign in the JPL.
They have won three of their last five games and sit seventh in the standings on 22 points.
They are level on points with Tivoli (eighth) but hold the advantage with a greater goal difference.
