Herbert Morrison coach sets high targets
Dave Black, coach of Herbert Morrison Technical High School's (HMTHS) basketball team, has set the bar high for his under-16 team that recorded a 105-5 win over Rhodes Hall High School in the ISSA Western Conference Basketball Competition.
"The players in the under-16 team have been playing together from the under-14 level. I think the last year in under-14, we placed third in the all-island, so we are looking forward to getting to the all-island, title. If we don't get to the all-island final this year, I think the players and myself as a coach would have failed," said Black.
"I think we have a lot of work to do when it comes to the under-19s, because the team is fairly new and young. We just have to work with them and see how far we can reach this year; but next year, we are going straight to the all-island finals," he added.
After falling just two points shy of his personal best last week, where he scored 57 points in their 93-48 win over Rhodes Hall's under-19s, David Gordon, captain of HMTHS, said he is focused on leading his young team to a title defence.
"The main objective for this season is always to win. We have a young team this year at the under-19, but we work hard every day, putting out our best, and anything that comes we grab it with two hands. The main objective is to go all the way and defend our title," said Gordon, who also led the school's football team to the second round of the ISSA daCosta Cup a few weeks ago.
Gordon, who won MVP in the all-island under-19 finals last year when they grabbed the title, said although he would want to win the season MVP for the Western Conference this season, he is more focused on them continuing their five-year unbeaten run.
"Yes, MVP is something that I am eyeing, so if it comes I'll grab it, but this season is not really my main aim. I just want to come out and work well with my teammates. They are young, so as a leader in the team I have to push myself and push them," said Gordon.
