Sunbathing crocodiles scare residents

Residents of Old Harbour Glades in St Catherine say they are scared of two crocodiles that are in the sewage treatment ponds which are close to their homes.

Winston Farquharson, a member of the community who reached out THE STAR, noted that they face imminent danger, as the area in which the creatures live is not fully fenced.

"They are also pretty close to roadways. Persons have seen them from time to time sunbathing, etc, and I am told the smaller one was seen on the road in the adjoining community," he said.

Pointing out that both children and adults are at risk, he said that the residents have reached out to the authorities that are responsible for safely removing the animals.

"Here's the disappointing part of this whole thing for me: NEPA (National Environment and Planning Agency) has been contacted several times about the matter and, the agency has promised time and again to come and remove the crocodiles, but the crocodiles are still in the ponds," an irate Farquharson said.

Upset about how long it is taking for the issue to be dealt with, he is urging the authorities to remove the animals before some residents are forced to take matters into their own hands.

"What is NEPA waiting for to come and remove the creatures? When someone has been maimed or killed, God forbid, what would the agency say then?," he questioned.

When THE STAR contacted NEPA, they confirmed that they had received calls about the presence of the crocodiles.
