NO DRINKS FOR THE DRIVER ... Partygoers urged to remain sober

Beverage company Red Stripe is encouraging persons to appoint a designated driver as they celebrate this Heroes' weekend.

"Holiday periods usually see an increase in the number of collisions on the road, however, we would like to see a difference over this weekend. Choosing a designated driver can help to curb this problem as it directly addresses the issue of persons driving under the influence," said Dianne Ashton-Smith, head of Red Stripe's corporate affairs.

This designated driver would be that one person who will not consume alcohol products and would also help to ensure members of their party are drinking responsibly.

Senior Superintendent of Police Calvin Allen, head of the traffic and highway patrol division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), has endorsed the suggestion for persons having designated drivers.

"Alcohol impairs one's mental capacity so they are unable to give maximum focus to practising good road safety habits. Ensuring that one person in a group does not consume alcohol at the event increases safety for the persons in the vehicle when leaving the venue, as well as the safety of other road users," Allen said.
